The End of a Semester: The Begining of New Discoveries

When I was first told I would be creating a blog that I would post in for the semester I was very worried. I am not a technology savvy person, I have never been great with computers and my strengths while strong in a creative sense were never in writing, let alone writing in a public domain. My worries were eased when I was informed that I would have the opportunity to choose the issue I would write about for the semester. As I thought of all the different topics I could discuss, celebrity infatuation kept popping into my mind. Working for Access Hollywood last summer had initially sparked my interest in why people were so obsessed with stars and their lives. I decided to use my blog as a platform to discuss the celebrity obsession and how it affects different forms of communication. Since I am a communication major I have a deep interest in the topics of discussion a society deems important. In recent years the fascination and discussion of celebrity has become unavoidable. The work presented in my blog looks to discover the implications star worship has about society and how it influences our daily lives.

The work presented here looks at important contributions to the field of communication in relation to entertainment and celebrity. While I feel that I have made a commendable effort to discover people and websites that support my research on stars and entertainment and their influence in my field of study, I know that my blog is not without its faults. My writing style can sometimes be too wordy and repetitive, and I have tried over the semester to combat this problem. I also realize that celebrity interest is not always an academic topic and I have worked hard to present my findings in a scholarly fashion and interesting light. I hope that my blog serves to further your knowledge on star worship and its relation to communication.

Honoring One of The Greats: Jonathan Taplin for USC Commencement Speaker

Young adults graduate from the University of Southern California each year and take their first steps into the real world. They leave college and often times go on to lead comfortable and relatively happy lives. Some become influential leaders in their fields of study, and others become significant contributors to their communities. Students begin may different professions when they leave school. The success they have in their given field is influenced by the education they received and lessons they learned while attending school. The University of Southern California’s mission is “the development of human beings and society as a whole through the cultivation and enrichment of the human mind and spirit.” This robust task is accomplished through the commitment and loyalty of faculty, staff, students and alumni to the University. The faculty in particular have a large impact on the students who leave USC. One man has not only impacted his students positively, he is also constantly contributing to the field of communication. Jonathan Taplin is an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California in the Annenberg School for Communication and has been working in the field of communication for the past twenty eight years. Taplin has worked as a tour manager for famous musicians, is a famed movie producer, a consultant, and the creator of Video On Demand and its first company Intertainer. His numerous accomplishments and dedication to the University of Southern California’s student body makes him an amazing candidate for the commencement speaker and worthy of the honorary degree from USC.
An honorary award is given to a person who has “made outstanding contributions to the welfare and development of USC or the communities of which they are a part; and looks to elevate the university in the eyes of the world by honoring individuals who are widely known and highly regarded for achievements in their respective fields of endeavor.” Jonathan Taplin upholds the goals of a USC honoree with his dedication and commitment to the communication field. Taplin began influencing the communication field while working as a tour manager for Bob Dylan. For the next seven years after his graduation from Princeton he worked with Dylan and The Band and then went onto produce films such as Mean Streets with Martin Scorsese. From 1984 until 2000 Taplin was immersed in the business of media and communication. With his work as a consultant for Disney and Merrill Lynch and the CEO of the first Video On Demand company, Intertainer, Taplin has continuously positively influenced the communication entertainment field.

These contributions each have their own merits and fall into a few important categories of assessment. In the book,
Meaningful Work: Rethinking Professional Ethics by Mike Martin from Chapman University, Martin discusses the three factors that are looked at in assessing achievement: attention to craft, personal compensation and moral commitment/concern . When choosing a commencement speaker and honoree it is also important to keep the four goals that USC looks to achieve when awarding an individual in mind: honor individuals who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary achievements in scholarship, the professions, or other creative activities, honor alumni and other individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the welfare and development of USC, recognize exceptional acts of philanthropy to the university and/or on the national or world scene and elevate the university in the eyes of the world by honoring individuals who are widely known and highly regarded for achievements in their respective fields. All of Taplin’s contributions to the field of communication and his community respectively fall into these three categories as well as fulfill the goals that USC looks to accomplish

Martin defines craft as, “desires to achieve expertise and desires to manifest technical skill, theoretical understanding, and creativity” (Martin, pg.22).
Taplin as the creator of Video On Demand (VOD) has proven his expertise in the field of communication with his innovative and creative approach to methods of accessing broadband entertainment. VOD is a revolutionary new technology in the communication field that allows users to have television content that is immediately accessible to them in the form they wish to receive it, and still of high quality. It is a digital form of media, which has revolutionized the way viewers interact with the content they desire. In an interview I conducted with Professor Taplin I asked what exactly sparked his interest in VOD. He expressed his previous disappointment and frustration with structure of content availability. He realized that people wanted immediate satisfaction and availability to content they enjoyed. Since he had been a producer of films he had a different outlook on how to provide consumers with the content they wanted. Technology driven companies had tried to create a VOD platform but were unsuccessful because they did not have a full understanding of what the consumer was looking for. A creative perspective paired with a vast amount of knowledge of what people wanted allowed Taplin to actually create a wide reaching and productive form of VOD. In the USC Honorary Award qualifications it is said that an individual who is awarded should have "distinguished themselves through extraordinary achievements in scholarship, the professions, or other creative activities." Jonathan Taplin's creation of VOD helps to distinguish himself as a creative and innovative leader in the field of communication as well as technology.

Taplin’s creation of VOD goes hand in hand with his company Intertainer . The management notes that their success is due to the fact that “The principals of Intertainer have joined together to build a broadband program service in the belief that the entertainment industry is at the threshold of a major paradigm shift in programming. Their collective relationships with the highest level of content providers, combined with a unique technological perspective gained over years of working in the cutting edge of new media, provides a competitive advantage over those approaching broadband delivery from a more hardware-oriented viewpoint.” By using his expertise in the field of communication Taplin was able to build the first successful launch of a working and marketable entertainment supplier. Taplin along with his colleagues have been awarded the licensing and patenting rights for VOD. The acknowledgment of Intertainers gift to the communication field and the awarding of patent rights prove Taplin as a man who is highly regarded in his field. Providing entertainment is a key channel for communication. Entertainment is one of the most influential forms of communication because it portrays values of a society while providing a form of marketable enjoyment. The ways in which people access their entertainment is just as important as the information they are receiving. VOD and Intertainer gave the public a fast and easy way to access information specifically related to their wants and desires.

James Freedman in his work
Liberal Education and The Public Interest discusses how recently Universities have begun to award celebrities or those involved in the entertainment field he says “ any aspiration to populate an American peerage is surely trivialized by decisions to garner a fleeting moment of public attention by awarding an institution’s ultimate accolade to mere celebrities- who are often famous principally for being famous” (Freedman, pg.126). Freedman, as well as other purists, believe honorary awards should be reserved for those who contribute to society in a “more beneficial manner.” While Taplin is an acclaimed film producer, and VOD does promote the entertainment field, it does not mean that his contributions to the field of communication are not noteworthy. VOD as well as his work with film have reached a mass audience and contributed to the expansion of different forms of communication and entertainment. Taplin’s dedication to his work and deep understanding of his craft outweighs the idea that celebrity and entertainment are trivial matters in society and should therefore not be recognized.

Taplin has also reached his highest potential in regards to personal compensation such as money, power, authority, and recognition. Martin establishes personal compensation as an important category to take into account when assessing an individuals worthiness of an honorary award. Professor Taplin has worked in many different areas pertaining to the field of communication, whether it be as a tour manager and producer of films or an advisor to famed entertainment companies he has established his authority in each role he has commanded. A short
biography of Taplin’s accomplishment outlines his steps towards ascertaining himself as a power in the communication world. He began his path towards success while acting as an investment advisor to Bass Brothers and helping them in their successful attempt to save Walt Disney Studios from a corporate raid. Through his knowledge of the field of communication and experiences with Bass Brothers he went on to serve as vice president of Merrill Lynch’s media mergers and acquisitions department. While working with Merrill Lynch he accomplished such achievements as helping landscape the leveraged buyout of Viacom entertainment and then went onto become CEO of the first VOD Company Intertainer.

Not only were Taplin’s accomplishments in the business aspect of Communication he also established
his name through his creative work as a producer (including the Academy Award winning film Mean Streets) and tour manager of such great artists as Bob Dylan and Janice Joplin. According to Martin “expertise is acquired through higher education and developed throughout a career”(Martin, pg.21). Taplin’s expertise in the field of communication is obvious in the previously noted achievements. Some may question how is this related to the criteria of compensation, expertise in a field establishes authority in a field which in turn allows for recognition and praise by those in the field. Therefore Taplin’s expertise in the field of communication and entertainment allows him to establish his authority and a presence within his community and deems him worthy of recognition. USC establishes that when looking for an honoree they look to choose candidates that will “elevate the university in the eyes of the world.” Taplin’s company Intertainer is not only widely recognized in the communication field it is also the largest provider of VOD services making Taplin and his firm both well known and established in the field. This noteworthy contribution and status would help to elevate the USC Annenberg School for Communication.

Moral Commitment/Concern is one of the most important roles an honorary nominee must have towards their craft and their community. There are two categories in which Martin explains moral commitment; caring motives and integrity motives. Caring Motives relate to the moral commitment to ones clients, customers, colleagues and wider community. Jonathan Taplin has time and time again shown these characteristics in every contribution he makes. As co founder of
The Annenberg Research Network for International Communication (ARNIC) he has shown his loyalty to the school, his craft and the wider community. ARNIC "studies the emergence of new communication infrastructures, examines the attendant transformation of government policies and communication patterns, and analyzes the social and economic consequences." These studies are performed in a multitude of third world countries and developing nations. Every year projects are constructed and implemented in order to provide different forms of technology to these nations that will benefit them and advance them in their development. Taplin's commitment to providing all communities with technology and communication resources is an example of his moral concern and establishes his integrity. The workshops that are held by ARNIC provide the communities in which they are held with outstanding contributions of technology and knowledge as well as enhance the welfare and development of third world countries and people. Taplin looks to further his as well as others contribution to the field of communication and in doing so is conscientious of the efforts he makes to improve the field of communication.

Loyalty to his colleagues and peers is seen in a testimony he presented to the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary, discussing “Competition, Innovation, and Public Policy in the Digital Age: Is the Marketplace Working to Protect Digital Creative Works?” In this work Taplin urges congress to not interfere with Digital Right Management and allow digital media companies the opportunity to create their own forms of protection of content and combat piracy in the way they best see fit. Throughout the entire testimony Taplin recognizes artists and their concerns with what digital media could do to the entertainment business and is empathetic and understanding. He provides alternative forms of combat to piracy and ensures that his company Intertainer and he are personally working to combat these problems. The loyalty to those in fields in which he is a part is undying, and his commitment to benefiting his consumers and the greater community is unparalleled. In his testimony he says, “The company that I lead today, Intertainer, was started in 1996 with the notion that digital broadband networks would be the conduit for on demand delivery of the best of American culture into the home. My vision is to enable Americans to have instant access to the immense library of film, television and music content that this country’s artists have been producing for decades.” This statement shows Taplin’s commitment to integrity. He has a “desire to meet ethical standards governing his profession and in other ways seek moral aims by working as a professional”(Martin, pg.23).

One may wonder what appeal Jontahn Taplin would create as a commencement speaker to the student body. His expertise is mostly in communication and not all students have earned degrees from the field. In an interview I conducted, I asked him what his advice would be to students and what values does he look to uphold and portray through his work and actions. He answered me very simply, “I would like to remind everyone that what is popular is not always necessarily good. I grew up in a time where artists and musicians and entertainers made a difference. What they did changed our world and as picturesque or naïve as it may seem I believe that is what life is all about.” As an individual who has lived and truly experienced life, Jonathan Taplin has the ability to remind the USC student Body that whatever they may do the most important thing to remember while doing it is to be happy and feel as though they are making a real contribution to society. Freedman reminds universities that “In bestowing an honorary degree a university makes an explicit statement to its students and the world about the qualities of character and attainment it admires most (Freedman, pg.117).” By choosing Jonathan Taplin USC would be letting the world know that the University values individuals who make a difference and believe in the beauty of individuality. Taplin’s accomplishments and moral integrity make him both a worthy and exceptional candidate for commencement speaker and honoree of USC. Martin said, “A life is more than outward events, and we understand persons only when we grasp the value commitments embedded in their motives, character, and worldview” (Martin, pg.16). By having Jonathan Taplin as the commencement speaker USC would be affording its student body a rare opportunity to learn from and better understand a man with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in life.

Websites Dedicated to Stardom: A Critique of The Leaky Cauldron

An obsession with celebrity has swept America, and this "Celebrity Worship Syndrome" has permeated every form of media and communication. As celebrity news has become more prevalent in the media, it has also become a very popular topic of discussion. Celebrity infatuation has both positive and negative aspects. For many young adults celebrity interest provides common grounds for discussion as well as friendships. It is hard to decipher when celebrity interest becomes too much, but it is important to keep in mind whether or not this infatuation is beneficial to ones life. For example, obsession with celebrities or characters that act as positive role models for young adults, and enrich the mind and social aspect of life can actually be quite important in personal and societal development. On the other hand, infatuation with celebrity gossip and lifestyles while entertaining does not enhance ones life in a consistent manner and can lead to psychological problems. While celebrity infatuation has increased so have the outlets that accommodate these obsessions. The internet provides a perfect platform to cater to celebrity interest. Often times sites are just detailed accounts of celebrity’s lives, and lack integrity, but some can actually promote stardom in a beneficial and healthy manner. One website in particular is an excellent tribute to celebrity in a healthy and informative way, this website is The Leaky Cauldron awarded the People' s Voice Award, in the Celebrity/ Fan category, at the 2006 Webby Awards. The website is targeted to Harry Potter fans and is a positive manifestation of celebrity worship because it provides fans access to responsible role models as well as nurtures ones imagination. While the Leaky Cauldron does provide its audience with many beneficial outlets for star worship it is not without its faults.

Most celebrity enthusiasts tend to be experts on their favorite stars and characters. This can present a problem for websites that look to give an audience beneficial information about the topic they are presenting. The Leaky Cauldron is loaded with information for Harry Potter fans that is both fascinating and innovative. It publishes Harry Potter News Updates, information about the books and films, access to exclusive interviews with the stars of the films and JK Rowling herself, as well as additional links to other websites dedicated to Harry Potter. The content is not only abundant, but it also is relevant to the audience the website is trying to reach. Children and young adults are the target audience for The Leaky Cauldron and the information on the website is directed towards this age group. The featured articles range from updates about the most recent books and film to information about Harry Potter charity events. At the end of each article a visitor is also given the opportunity to post a comment. The Leaky Cauldron is a superior tribute to celebrity because it provides its audience with the opportunity to speak up about what they believe in, as well as gives a platform for young adults to articulate themselves and be heard. For example in the article Georgia Woman Continues Fight to Ban Potter Books, more than 120 fans posted comments in regards to the news articles. One comment in particular caught my eye, a young woman wrote “I mean magic is making possible something otherwise impossible right? Well then, similar to miracles... Ironically, what other book portrays miracles, evil, death/murder, greed and more lots more adult (as in sexual) subject matter.... erm... the Bible? By generalizing so much, following her reasoning to its logical conclusion she would have to ban the values of the very book she is supposedly trying to uphold!!!” This comment adressed the idea that Harry Potter was an abomination of the bible and its teachings. The comment is a perfect example of how the Leaky Cauldron is providing a stage for intellectual debate and commentary. The Harry Potter infatuation has sparked a young woman’s ability to confront an issue that she feels strongly about in an intellectual and appropriate manner.

The Leaky Cauldron audience mostly consists of a younger fan base, and in order to be advantageous to the audiences needs it is important for The Leaky to appeal to their logical thought process in terms of organization of information and site design. The navigation of The Leaky Cauldron website is quite easy. On the left hand side of the home page and all other subsequent pages of the website there is a navigation bar. This divides the information on the website into topics and sub topics. Each subtopic is hyperlinked to and from their specific pages back to the home page as well as other pages throughout the site. According to the Web Style Guide, which explains the proper techniques needed to create an effective website, it states that "search facilities are a necessity for large sites." The Web Style Guide also stresses that it is important for visitors to know what content is being searched. The leaky Cauldron has a few different types of search options, they have a comprehensive website search titled the "Leaky Search" as well as a more specific search option in their News section called "News Archives Search." This is a helpful and important feature to the website since there is such a large breadth of information that is offered. The logical organization of information on the website enhances the visitor’s experience by providing them with an efficient channel to gain information on their specific interests. When visitors can easily steer throughout the site they are more likely to retain the subject matter they are learning about. This not only makes the visitor a knowledgeable Harry Potter fanatic it also provides them with an important learning tool that they can apply to other parts of their life.

The structure of the website while very visually appealing has a few problems with the flow of information. The Leaky Cauldron seems to use a "Weblike Structure." The Web Style Guide says that a weblike structures main goal is "to mimic associative thought and the free flow of ideas, allowing users to follow their interests in a unique, heuristic, idiosyncratic pattern. Although the goal of this organization is to exploit the Web's power of linkage and association to the fullest, weblike structures can just as easily propagate confusion." The Leaky Cauldron is a little hard to follow when moving from page to page. The weblike format causes some uncertainty with where exactly the visitor is within the website of where they found some of the information. For young users this can be a problem because they may not have the cognitive ability to remember how to get from one source of information to the next. Weblike structures also create problems for fans who are not overly versed in the subject matter. As a first time user the weblike structure did cause confusion because I had a difficult time orienting myself within the website. This problem could be combated by using an information heiarchy structure instead. This web structure is best when there are large quantities of information that can be linked to the homepage. Since the Leaky Cauldron has such a large breadth of inforamtion it would appeal more to the visitors logos or logic skills if they used a heiarchy information organization structure. The Leaky Cauldron does try to eliminate any confusion by explaining the different web pages in an area called "Welcome to the New Leaky. " This page explains the purpose of each new section on the website and briefs the visitor on what type of information can be found there.

The Leaky Cauldron’s visual design makes the website appear very credible. According to the Webby Award criteria, Visual Design deals with the overall appearance of the website. Furthermore "good visual design is high quality, appropriate, and relevant for the audience and the message it is supporting." Aesthetically the Leaky Cauldron is very appealing. The graphics are appropriate and not overly bold. They draw the reader's eyes to the page as well as direct the visitor to other content on the page. The creators of the Leaky Cauldron have paid specific attention to detail while fashioning their web page. The attention to detail appeals to visitors and establishes credibility amongst Harry Potter fans. All of the permanent links to related websites resemble pieces of parchment with the names of the link printed on them in the same font that is used in the original Harry Potter books. The pieces of parchment also appear to be tacked up on some type of bulletin board. When a user rolls their mouse over the parchment it unrolls revealing even more information. All of these links appear on every page throughout the site. The Leaky Cauldron website does this to make their site more memorable, and consistent throughout the readers visit. The Web Style Guide says that this consistency in graphic layout "builds rhythm and unity across the pages," leading to a more organized and effective site. In a picture frame in the top left hand corner of the page, there is a photograph of Harry Potter. This photo is not only a wonderful representation, but Harry's eyes actually follow the mouse around the page as you click on different links. The more you click on links the more Harry's expression changes.

Accoding to the Web Style Guide, "A successful site requires real, sustained engagement, and you get that only by offering both sophisticated visual stimuli and a site that is structured to meet the needs of its audience quickly and effectively." The Leaky Cauldron works within these guidelines all of the graphics are visually stimulating but they also are consistent through out the website. The graphics work to visually enhance what would have been lackluster hyperlinks as well as create credibility of the site amongst its readers. Credibility is very important with celebrity fanatics. Most people who worship celebrities know very detailed information about the person/character they are interested in. By establishing credibility through detailed information and appropriate layouts The Leaky Cauldron effectively adresses the interests of its fan base. This intrigues fans and also lets them become loyal visitors because they know the information they are being provided with is acurate and interesting.

Celebrity fanatics are not just concerned with what is happening in their favorite stars lives they also want to feel that they are a part of their celebrity’s world. An interactive and effective website allows fanatics access to the celebrity universe. Interactivity is in my opinion the most advanced and interesting part of the Leaky Cauldron website. The webby awards state that good interactivity “is more than a rollover or choosing what to click on next; it allows you, as a user, to give and receive. It insists that you participate, not spectate.” The Leaky has so many features that allow its visitors to be a part of the website. Some of the newest features allow each visitor to customize their own homepage. Readers can change the size of the font as well as which character greets them on their homepage and follows them while they click on different links. No longer will a visitors only have the option of Harry following them with his eyes, they can have Hedwig, Hermione, or Ron. Along with interacting with the layout, Visitors also have the option of customizing how they would like to receive their favorite types of Harry Potter news. Readers can sign up for the online news letter, have news come to your cell phone by Leaky Mobile, as well as subscribe to only specific types of news notifications so you can have specialized information you are interested in. Along with signing up for specialized news feeds readers can also vote on the website about what types of news they would like to have reported. The leaky Cauldron not only allows its readers to have up to date news delivered to them it also provides its visitors a platform on which to post their very own essays about Harry Potter called Scribbulus.

Scribbulus provides Harry Potter fanatics with an opportunity to be imaginative and creative. The scribbulus essays discuss theories about the Harry Potter books, make predictions about the up and coming Harry Potter stories and even have literary comparisons. By giving visitors the chance to hone their writing skills the Leaky Cauldron is making the Harry Potter obsession beneficial to a fans ability to communicate their thoughts efficiently and creatively. The interest in Harry Potter enhances a fans life by introducing them to a subject that they feel passionately enough about to write about.

The discussion forum called The Leaky Lounge provides fans with a place to make friends and discuss topics of similar interest. Fans can interact with each other in online chat rooms and have discussions related to Harry Potter. The common interest of Harry Potter brings people together and allows them to foster relationships with others by discussing common interests. When visitors participate they become part of the Harry Potter world. This participation allows fans to develop their imagination, creative writting skills and social interactions.

While the Leaky Cauldron is a well rounded and interesting site it does have some shortcomings. One of those short comings is the lack of information and activities for an older fan base. Harry Potter may have originally started as childrens novel, but it has reached an adult audience as well. The Leaky Cauldron seems to focus its content on a younger audience and by doing so eliminates an entire population of Harry Potter fans. This problem could be combated by providing adult discussion forums similar to the Leaky Lounge. The forum could host topics that discuss how parents can realte to their children through Harry Potter and provide a more serious place for Harry Potter discussion. The adult section of the website could also include information on how to make sure that children do not develop unhealthy obsessions with Harry Potter. An adult section of the website could also create a platform for camaraderie based on common interests and insights.

Psychologists have discussed how celebrity obsessions can often lead to depression and social anxieties, because fans become too enthralled with the stars they worship and loose sight of their own lives and accomplishments. Websites such as the Leaky Cauldron combat this detrimental effect of celebrity worship by providing their audience members with interactive activites that showcase their own accomplishments and skills. James Houran, a clinical psychologist with the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine discusses how celebrity admiration is normal in human development. He says "Celebrities can inspire people off all ages to be better than they are." The Leaky Cauldron uses the Harry Potter infatuation to encourage its visitors to be better than they are by giving them access to a platform where they can nurture their mind and foster new relationships. Harry Potter fanatics will love the Leaky Cauldron website because it is creative, fun, informative and professional. It is a positive manifestation of celebrity worship and interest because it allows users to get involved in the Harry Potter Universe. Instead of just being obsessed with Harry Potter fans can expand their own accomplishments by contributing to intellectual debates and conversations dealing with Harry Potter. The extensive use of fun technology helps the experience at the website become exciting and all enthralling. The website captures the visitor’s attention and draws them in with the multidimensional graphics and interesting topics. As a first time viewer and a Harry Potter enthusiast, I was prompted to explore the website and interested to see all it had to offer. I not only learned new information I also got to be an active member in the Harry Potter community. This activity helps fanatics to regulate thir interest in Harry Potter and still lead a healthy interactive lifestyle.

Celebrity Obsession Taken Too Far: Understanding the Celebrity Obsessed Mind

As I have discussed in my previous posts celebrity gossip has become a dominant topic of conversation for many Americans. This is due to the public's obsession with celebrity. Stars lives have become such a principal subject of conversation that Americans seem to have forgotten about more pressing matters such as the current economic state of the country or the war in Iraq. Celebrity gossip and news may have started as a lighthearted interest but has slowly infiltrated our everyday lives. People who become too involved in celebrity worship end up endangering not only the stars they are infatuated with, but also their own personal well being.

In an article in Psychology Today, titled The Stalker in All of Us, anthropologist Helen Fishe discusses how those who are deeply obsessed with celebrities often times lie to themselves about the relationships they have with stars. Fisher relates this obsession to a form of powerful romantic feelings. Those that experience theese deep feelings of obsession or romance often times end up with feelings of depression and disappointment because the feelings they have can not be returned. This is one of the many detrimental effects that celebrity worship can have on consumers.

Fascinated by the different effects that celebrity worship can have on ones psyche, I decided to conduct a little more research. As I explored the internet in search of more compelling examples and information about celebrity obsession, I came across two very interesting blogs. The first blog I found and commented on was titled, Aspiring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Bodyguard/Stalker Hybrid Arrested on the website Defamer. This post particularly interested me because it gave an example of a person who had become too interested in celebrities, and how it had affected their psychological state and their everyday life. The second blog post I found interesting was Star Struck, on the website Mind Hacks. This post was incredibly informative because it explained how celebrity worship can effect ones ability to reason, as well as be detrimental to ones cognitive flexibility- the capacity to change ideas and thought processes while problem solving. Both postings dealt with the detrimental effects that celebrity worship has had on the American public. I urge you to read the posts I have commented on and then decide whether or not America's celeb obsession has gone to an unhealthy extreme.

Due to some technical difficulties on the Defamer site my comments unfortunately have not shown up. The original post by Defamer is still fully accessible, and my comments I have posted below.

I find it interesting to see how interest in celebrities can manifest itself into a full blown obsession. The fact that Nelson Mercado would lie about his work experience in order to become closer with stars is a bit discomforting. The use of fake credentials and false certifications from the Department of Homeland Security suggest that Mercado has serious psychological problems. When a person becomes so enthralled with celebrities that they lie about their actual life in order to work for, or get close to those that are famous, there is evidence to suggest that they need medical attention.

Studies have been conducted to measure safe levels of celebrity worship. Mercado seems to identify with some of the warning sign of when celebrity obsession can become dangerous for both the celebrity as well as the stalker. Mercado may be suffering from an inability to distinguish his real life from the life he has created out of his love for celebrities. This posting is a perfect example of celebrity obsession taken too far. I commend you on your efforts to point out the absurdity of Mercado's behavior as well as inform the public of some of the unhealthy realities of Celebrity obsession. It is important to realize that mild celebrity interest can be enjoyable, but if taken to an extreme, it can affect ones psychological health as well as ones personal well being.

Tabloid News: Feeding America's Celebrity Addiction

As I waited in the Las Vegas International Airport this weekend I amused myself by leafing through the magazines in the snack shop. Lucky, Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Marie Claire seemed to top my list. Suddenly, US Weekly caught my eye, A New Love for Jessica! I was sold. As I feverishly flipped through the pages to find the latest gossip on Jessica and her new romance I stopped and looked up only to see Jessica Dumped, in large bolded letters across the cover of People. I dropped the US Weekly that only moments before had captivated my attention, and immediately began to leaf through People. When out of the blue I had an epiphany; “What was I doing?” “Was I really allowing tabloid magazines to enthrall my senses?” I quickly placed the magazine back on the rack and left the shop. As I sat on my plane later that day I looked around and noticed how many people, just like me were enthralled with tabloid news. What is it about tabloids that seem to interest the American public so much? And more importantly is it healthy to be so celebrity obsessed?

With the recent celebrity obsession tabloid magazines have become a staple on American coffee tables. Tabloids allow access to the most intimate details of celebrity’s lives. The growing star obsession is somewhat of a phenomenon. In an article in the online magazine
Cosmos, it is quoted that New Scientist magazine has dubbed this celeb obsession an epidemic sweeping America. They have labeled this so called epidemic "celebrity worship syndrome" or C.W.S. Tabloid news feeds the addiction many Americans have to celebrity gossip. The juicier the gossip the more addicted readers become to the magazines.

Some feel that being interested in celebrity gossip is just a frivolous past time, but in fact this somewhat humorous obsession, actually can have an impact on ones psychological health.
James Houran, a clinical psychologist has said that at low levels of consumption tabloid news can actually be beneficial to ones psyche. In Houran's book Celebrity Worshippers: Inside the Minds of Stargazers, Houran discusses how interest in celebrities (in moderation) is enjoyable because it gives readers something to believe in. People become attatched to the celbrities they read about and create a genuine concern for them. Tabloid news gives people common topics to discuss, it provides entertainment and is a form of escape from people’s every day lives and problems. When tabloid readers learn in a magazine that even Jennifer Aniston has marital problems they instantly feel a little more normal.

The detrimental effects of celeb gossip occur when individuals become too interested in celebrities lives. So the question becomes: when does consumption become too much? Houran created a celebrity interest scale titled "The Celebrity Attitude Scale," which is specifically designed to answer this question. In an
ABC News article Houran’s scale of healthy and unhealthy celebrity worship is explained. There are three stages. “The first is "entertainment social" where someone has a casual interest in celebrities. The next level is "intense personal" where people can no longer separate fantasy from reality. The final, most intense stage of celebrity worship is "borderline-pathological" which can be marked by criminal or dangerous behavior.” Although there are some people who are a part of the second and third levels of Houran’s scale, the majority of celebrity infatuated American’s can be categorized as “entertainment social.”

In the end being obsessed with celebrities is not actually a terrible thing. Tabloid news, in moderation, can be an enjoyable and healthy pastime. Instead it is easy to think of the star obsession somewhat like a religion; yes there is the occasional fanatic, but most partake in the pastime for personal fulfillment. Whether it be the latest issue of Life & Style or this months Torah portion, find solace in the fact that you, like so many others have something to look forward to and believe in. So next time I'm in the airport or the grocery store, I will proudly pick up my copy of People and indulge with out any feelings of guilt.

Catering to the Celebrity Obsession

Communication is by definition an interchange of thoughts, opinions or information that is considered to be of some type of importance. Media disseminates this information through a multitude of outlets such as television, newspapers, magazines, internet etc. The media is used for a variety of purposes including: advertising, governmental campaigns, education and entertainment.

Over the past twenty years television networks have focused on entertaining viewers through media. Networks entertain their audiences by appealing to their interest with the type of programs they produce. In recent years there has been an emergence of a new type of program, Entertainment New Magazines. These programs focus on celebrity news/gossip, fashion tips, exercise/health and red carpet coverage. Examples of these programs include NBC's Access Hollywood, Paramount-CBS' Entertainment Tonight, and Warner Bros. Extra. All of these programs have emerged in the past ten years and have obtained a devoted and loyal fan base. Many may wonder why these programs have grown so much in recent years. The most apparent reason seems to be the public's infatuation with celebrity.

The American obsession with celebrity has grown at an alarming rate. Media recognizes that and makes use of it.. Simply put in an article in
USA Today, "America is enmeshed in a harmonic convergence of celebrity infatuation. Celebrities fill our magazines and our TV screens. Celebrities tell us what books to read. What shoes to buy. What perfume to wear. And, of course, celebrities seek our votes. The nation's new manifest destiny is a non-stop celebration of all things famous." Entertainment News Magazines provide their audiences with the opportunity to feel as if they are a part of the celebrity world. In the past celebrities appeared to be inaccessible to the public. Now all one needs to do is turn on their television and be informed of the intimate details of Jessica Simpson's divorce or Mel Gibson's DUI incident. Celebrities' lives have become a topic of discussion in all crowds. Whether people discuss stars fashion choices, eating habits or current love interests they are still partaking in the mania of celebrity news and gossip. The public entertains themselves, and are entertained by celebrity news.

What or Whom is to blame for this sudden infatuation? Some point the finger at the media. Dick Clark a long time celebrity feels that, "celebrity obsession is mostly an outgrowth of tabloid newspapers, trash TV and the Internet." In some ways Clark is correct if Americans were not provided television shows that focus on celebrities and their lives the interest may not be as high. But on the other hand it is not to say that the obsession with celebrity would completely die due to a lack of information. Celebrities are a form of entertainment and have been for a long time. It is unlikely that the media is the sole power responsible for the obsession.

If communication is used to distribute information of importance, and entertainment is a form of communication, is it to say that what Americans deem important is celebrity gossip? With the growing following of Entertainment News magazines, the logical response to the question seems to be - -yes- -. It is hard to fathom that what Americans regard as valuable information is the personal details of celebrities' lives. The real question one should mull over though, is, "Does celebrity news add value to our lives"
